The 2016 Take The Lake event is just around the corner. This year’s dates for the annual Labor Day Endurance Challenge are September 3, 4 & 5, 2016.
The TTL weekend will kick off with the highly popular Take the Plate spaghetti supper on Friday, September 2, 2016 from 5:30-7:30 pm at the LW United Methodist Church Fellowship Hall. The event is eat-in or takeout and donations will be accepted.
Due to the excessive rainfall this summer and
subsequent slippery conditions on the dam, the
Bike/Hike will NOT be going through the park!
But wait till next year!
We will have our bridge by then.

Fellow Citizens of the Town of Lake Waccamaw,
Labor Day weekend is once again upon us and with it the annual Take The Lake Personal Endurance Challenges. The event in its present format began in 2008, but its roots go back to 1940 with Lee J. Greer encouraging hundreds of Columbus Countians, young and old, to swim the Lake on Labor Day. Mr. John A. McNeil became involved in the Labor Day swim with Mr. Greer in the 1950’s and has continued that involvement in the original Labor Day swim for the past 50 plus years. Around 2000, Grant Egley organized annual walks around the Lake on Labor Day weekend, which morphed into TTL. Mr. John A. McNeill has been an ardent supporter of the Take The Lake event since its inception and the medal presented to each participant who finishes is the John A McNeill Award better known as the JAMA.
This 3-day event will require some sacrifices on our part. Columbia Avenue will be temporarily closed at the beginning of the Walk/Run around 8 a.m. on Saturday and 1:45 p.m. on Sunday for the Bike Ride.
Be aware of the Family Fun Riders and Walkers Saturday morning and Sunday afternoon on the streets adjacent to Elizabeth Brinkley Park.
Watch out for Paddlers on the Lake Sunday morning and the swimmers on Labor Day.
All Labor Day Weekend land events will begin and end at Elizabeth Brinkley Park. Any roads east of Columbia Avenue and Lake Shore Drive will not be impacted by bikers and walkers/runners.
Please join me in welcoming all the participants to what has become the biggest physical fitness event in our area. Please continue the tradition of providing refreshments on the route as that has always been appreciated and continues to enforce our reputation as the “The pleasantest place I ever saw in my life”.
